Captain Larry Brudnicki retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 2002 after an impressive 30-year career, leading high-risk missions, including two dramatic rescues during "The Perfect Storm", one of the most extreme weather events in a century. This harrowing story of real people battling for survival on a sea gone wild became a best-selling book and a hit film starring George Clooney. Renowned for his ability to assess risks, make critical decisions, and inspire teamwork, Brudnicki's leadership left a lasting impact.

As Chief of Operations for the 11th Coast Guard District, he supervised over 15,000 search-and-rescue cases, saving 1,600 lives and $135 million in property. He directed operations that seized over 150 tons of cocaine, including the largest drug seizures in 2000 and 2001, and oversaw the interdiction of 2,800 illegal migrants. He also led the search for survivors of the Alaska Air Flight #261 tragedy.

Brudnicki's early career included commanding the USCGC CAPE CURRENT, where he helped pioneer Coast Guard counter-drug operations. He earned degrees in Engineering and Physics, taught at the Coast Guard Academy, and contributed to navigation research. He played a key role in converting aids to navigation to solar power, gaining international recognition for the Coast Guard as a leader in this field.

He commanded USCGC BRAMBLE, leading early Waterways Management Analysis studies and assisting in drug seizures totalling 100,000 pounds of marijuana. As Chief of Aids to Navigation in Alaska, his proactive strategies helped mitigate federal liability after the Exxon Valdez oil spill. During The Perfect Storm, as Commanding Officer of USCGC TAMAROA, he led record-setting fishing vessel seizures and supported Haitian migration interdiction.

Brudnicki later commanded the Coast Guard’s role in the 1995 America’s Cup and led USCGC CHASE on fisheries patrols in the Bering Sea. His final mission involved intercepting a Chinese fishing vessel violating UN regulations.

Honoured with awards including the Legion of Merit and the Coast Guard Medal for heroism, Brudnicki now shares his leadership and risk management insights as a professional speaker, helping organisations implement strategies for success while avoiding critical mistakes.
