Japanese Light Painter
“Hikarie” Light Painting features live performances by Jinpei, using his unique technique to craft artworks with light. As the performance venue is enveloped in complete darkness, sweeping beams of light "paint" a vast canvas. Allegorical and symbolic figures and landscapes come to life, only to vanish within moments. As each element fades and new ones emerge, the audience experiences a waking dream, a nocturnal garden of wonder.
In 1989, Jinpei invented and refined HIKARIE (Painting with Light), a technique involving a special light source on treated canvas. This unique and fleeting form of performance art sees the paintings disappear in minutes, leaving luminous images imprinted in the spectators' minds. Jinpei has collaborated with musicians using HIKARIE, most notably in the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare-sponsored AIDS initiative, RED RIBBON LIVE 2008, performing alongside Alan, Angela Aki, Teru from GLAY, HYDE, Eriko Imai, Mao Kobayashi, and Kyoko Sasaki.
The duration of the light painting performance varies based on the event and space size, generally lasting between 5 to 20 minutes. For the light painting to be viewed effectively, all lights in the space must be turned off or blocked out.
