On her 16th birthday, as per tradition, the mermaid takes her turn to swim to the surface and witnesses a human Prince celebrating his birthday on a ship.

When the ship tragically sinks, the mermaid rescues the prince and brings him to shore, retreating to the water before being seen. This brief encounter leaves the Little Mermaid yearning to become human and win the Prince’s love. Desperate, she approaches a sea witch for help and receives a potion to replace her tail with legs, despite the witch’s warning about the accompanying great pain. In exchange, the little mermaid gives up her voice. If she can earn the prince’s love and marry him, she can remain human forever and live happily ever after.
